Event description
Derek Weathersbee will provide practical advice on how to keep designers content and excited about their jobs.

About this Event

As an instructor and a designer experienced with creative agencies around the country, his role has given him a broad and unique insight into the practices within not only design agencies, but anywhere that requires the services of designers.

Drawing from his own experience as an employee, a designer, and instructor of many of those in or now entering the local workforce, he will provide practical advice on how to keep designers content and excited about their jobs, so they not only produce better work but also, aren't eager to leave town.

This will require some potentially uncomfortable shifts in approach and mindset by employers, and designers themselves, evidenced by the many inspiring and disturbing stories he's been told by strong and honest designers and his own professional experiences. But Derek has seen firsthand how creating the right work environment can be a win for all of us.

About the Speaker:

Derek is a graphic designer, developer and instructor, with a focus on branding and type & font design. You can see his type design work all over the world, used by major corporations like Target, Starbucks, the NFL, MLB and countless others, as well as media ranging from major motion pictures to boutique beard oil. His current and past design and web clients span the globe as well, from New York to Colorado, California to Israel.

As part of a fresh, four-man shop while still in college, his first projects were substantial ones, and entailed writing radio scripts, creating graphics for and roaming the sets of national television commercials and television shows, and meeting amazing people.

After living in the DFW metroplex for over half a decade for college and work, he returned back home around 2010 while still working for his Dallas employer. In 2011, he decided to begin working on his own, creating more type, and the next year he also began teaching at Amarillo College, where he remains today. He officially launched the digital type foundry Weathersbee Type in 2014 and continues to explore new media.
