Description

Come on out to Lulu's Farm in Brighton Colorado and rub elbows with some of the elite in the competition barbeque world. Enjoy delicious food, great craft beers from local and national breweries, awesome music, vendor fair, kid's fun zone. It's two days of fun for all ages!

Lulu's Brew & Que is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned state competition, following all of the rules and guidelines of the KCBS organization, mixed in with a signature Lulu's twist! In addition to the official KCBS competition, teams can compete against each other in the People's Choice Meatball Mash-up and Grillin' Beans contests on Friday evening (also open to home cooks and barbeque enthusiasts to compete), and the People's Choice Battle of the Butts on Saturday afternoon (competitive teams only).

Team Information

Included in your team registration fee

  • Entry into all four official KCBS categories (required)
  • 20x30 space (additional 10x20 space available for $25)
  • Two ten pound bags of ice
  • Electrical hook-up (you must supply your own extension cords and outdoor power strips)
  • One complimentary adult ticket to the Almost Home, Inc. fundraiser pancake breakfast (additional are suggested donation of $8 adult/$5 kids under 12)
  • Entry into and 10# chub of ground beef, pork, chicken, or turkey for Meatball Mash-up contest Friday (optional)
  • Entry into Grillin' Beans contest (optional)
  • Entry into and two pork butts for Battle of the Butts contest Saturday (optional)

Thursday, September 28, 2017: Early Arrival

  • Temporary overnight parking in the Lulu's parking lot will be available for un-attended early arrival beginning at 6:30 PM.

Friday, September 29, 2017: Arrival/Prep Day and Rockabilly Bash with Meatball Mash-up/Grillin' Beans Contests

  • Assigned space parking begins at 8:00 AM
  • Teams MUST arrive no later than 12:00 PM
  • Meat Inspection begins at 10:00 AM: Inspector will also verify that you have a charged fire extinguisher, meat thermometer, food service gloves, and proper storage of meat (must be maintained below 40F or above 140F. Proper food handling is required at all times, and if you are also a food vendor, the inspector will check to make sure you have 3 wash bins (wash, rinse, disinfect) as well.
  • Cooks Meeting: 3:00 PM in the judge's tent
  • 6:30 PM doors open for Rockabilly Bash festivities
  • 7:00-7:45 PM Meatball Mash-up and Grillin' Beans tasting by attendees
  • 8:00 PM all votes in for People's Choice Meatball and Beans
  • 9:00 PM People's Choice Awards Ceremony
  • 9:45 PM last call for alcohol
  • 10:00 PM festivities end

Saturday, September 30, 2017: KCBS Barbeque Contest and Festival with Battle of the Butts

Contest is sanction by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. See the KCBS Rules and Regulations Handbook for detailed information governing this competition.

General Info

  • Electricity: hook-ups will be available on site. You are responsible for providing your own extension cords and power strips. We recommend 50' cords and outdoor power strips.
  • Grease/Ash Disposal: all grease and ash must be disposed of in the designated containers. Absolutely no dumping of grease or ash in cook site is permitted!
  • Grey Water Disposal: All grey water must be disposed of in the designated disposal area.
  • Trash: all trash must be removed regularly and deposited by each contest team in the dumpster provided, not in the trash barrels placed for the use of festival attendees.
  • Water: we will have water available on-site, though we recommend bringing a gallon jug or two for filling up as we are not on city water service so water will be brought in.
  • Ice: each team receives two vouchers for a 10# bag of ice (included in registration fee) at official check-in Friday morning. Additional 10# bags of ice will be available on-site through Lulu's Farm store for $2.00 each (plus tax).
  • Porta Potties: designated porta potties will be provided for contest teams separate of the festival and store.


People's Choice Battle of the Butts, Meatball Mash-up, and Grillin' Beans Contests

Participation in the Meatball Mash-up and Grillin' Beans Contest (Friday) and Battle of the Butts (Saturday) is optional, but highly recommended and preferred in order to provide our attendees the best experience possible. As part of your team registration, each participating team will receive two pork butts for the Battle of the Butts, and a ten pound chub of your choice of ground beef, pork, chicken, or turkey for the Meatball Mash-up. It is your choice whether to add additional meat for these contests, but it is recommended. Participating teams will distribute samples served in designated sampling containers (provided by event organizer).

Participating teams will take tickets (the official currency of the Brew & Que) in exchange for samples, and will cash the tickets in at the end of the event for payout. Payout for contest samples is 50% of ticket price, as follows:

  • $.50 per sample ticket from Meatball Mash-up and Grillin' Beans Contests
  • $1.00 per sample ticket from Battle of the Butts Contest

People's Choice Prizes: All winners receive spotlight on website and Facebook along with serious bragging rights until next year!
