Description

Microplastics in the Mississippi

Presented by: Dr. Mark Benfield

A disposable plastic water bottle can travel the length of the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Louisiana leaching toxic chemicals into the water and estuaries. LSU Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences Professor Mark Benfield and colleagues collect large amounts of plastic smaller than the size of a Mardi Gras bead called microplastics in nets aboard a small boat. They are studying the abundance and composition of microplastics in the river.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for free food and networking, and the talk will start at 6 p.m. Remember, people of all ages are welcome, so please spread the word and join us for a fun and informative night!
