COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In this seminar, you will learn the finer details of prosthetic and orthotics and how it relates to therapy. We will dive deep into gait deviations, prosthetic alignment, new technology, orthotic and prosthetic troubleshooting, componentry selection, and much more.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose common trans-tibial and trans-femoral gait deviations and possible solutions

  • Appropriately treat a patient who has a recent amputation

  • Identify an amputee’s functional abilities (K-level) and appropriate componentry

  • Correctly doff, don and troubleshoot a variety of prosthetic suspension methods

  • Identify specific characteristics of higher end prosthetic technology and how to incorporate that into therapy (i.e. walking backwards, stair ascending and descending, running, etc.)

  • Identify and recommend a wide range of orthotic devices and components for specific patient presentations

  • Properly train patient’s with stance control KAFOs

  • Identify if their patient is a good candidate for an off-the-shelf orthosis versus a custom orthosis

  • Understanding the basics of prosthetic and orthotic coding, authorization, and insurance requirements


COURSE SCHEDULE:

7:30 Registration

8:00 Introductions and overview of prosthetics (functional levels, indications and contraindications, post-op treatment, stretching and strengthening, etc.)

8:30 Trans-tibial prosthetics (components, gait deviations, suspensions, troubleshooting, hands on training and possible patient model)

10:15 Break

10:30 Trans-femoral prosthetics (components, gait deviations, suspensions, troubleshooting, hands on training and possible patient model)

12:00 Lunch (on your own)

1:00 Introductions and overview of AFOs (indications and contraindications, OTS vs. custom, gait deviations, trim lines, material selection, ankle joints overview, troubleshooting, demonstrations and hands-on)

2:45 Break

3:00 Introductions and overview of KAFOs (indications and contraindications, trim lines, material selection, gait deviations, ankle and knee joints overview, troubleshooting, demonstrations and hands-on)

4:30-5:00 Closing remarks, review of material, Q&A
