Event description

Description

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a modern, non-violent, non-aggressive Japanese martial art. Aiki means blending body with mind to the movements of energy. The term do means a way or path chosen towards self-realization. Regular practice is a way of integrating body and mind. Through dynamic martial practice the body is awakened, the mind is sharpened and the spirit is nourished.

The movements of aikido are generally smooth and fluid. Circles and spirals predominate in the techniques. In the rhythm of practice, partners change roles allowing each to feel both aspects (attack and defense) of the technique. The general atmosphere of training is one of mutual cooperation and respect.

As a system of self-defense, aikido employs techniques that blend with the opponent’s trajectory of attack and imbalance the opponent. Rather than meeting the force of a strike head on, the defender moves his or her body out of range, taking the attacker’s balance.

Low Impact Aikido:

In this low impact class we will focus on the beginning of the encounter; managing your own responses and studying the elements of balance in your practice partner. You will learn how to efficiently move your whole body out of the range of a strike (or line of force). To escape grasps, you will learn how to make good use of the ground forces and skeletal leverage.

The benefits of aikido practice include:

  • Increased confidence in one’s movement
  • Sense of comfort and centeredness in one’s own body
  • Improved coordination, proprioception and whole-body motion.
  • Ability to remain calm in difficult conversations
  • Lower stress and better stress management
  • Improved resilience
  • Joy in everyday life

Plan to wear something comfortable you can move in. Loose fitting pants and a T-shirt would be fine. Remove all jewelry. Be prepared to practice barefoot. We practice on a matted floor. You do not have to fall down for this class.

Your instructor:

Suzane Van Amburgh is 5th degree black belt, shidoin certified instructor with over 25 years teaching experience. Her approach in teaching, is to create a learning environment where the student can discover themselves in movement. Curiosity, good humor and attentive practice are cultivated. Van Amburgh Sensei works with people of all skills and body types.

When: Wednesdays, 12:30-1:30pm

Fees: First class $25. Series price available - register for a series onsite.
