Event description

Description

February Featured Artist Teresa Vazquez will host a Poetry Night at the Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9), as part of her “LoveLit” event, on Friday, February 16th, 7-9pm. Tickets are $5. “LoveLit: Poems” will feature poetry by Maria Hamilton Abegunde, and Bekah Pollard, as well as by Vazquez, and will offer a love-themed open mic opportunity.

“’LoveLit: Poems’ speaks to the historic exploration of the many faces of love through art,” said Vazquez. “I see much of my work as being related to love in the action of making something that did not exist before; of bringing attention to those details that did not receive the same artistic attention before. The poetry reading features poems of love, as defined by their creators. Just as the artworks are layered, complicated if you will, love is also layered and complicated. The poetic offerings are meant to get us contemplating love in a variety of ways.

Teresa Vazquez has an MFA in Art and Technology, from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, but stopped creating art for 13 years. She credits love, dreaming, and a bump on the head with returning her to art, and forcing her reinvention as an artist and as a person. In 2000, Vazquez released a CD entitled, “A Woman Loving,” that was composed of spoken word and soundscapes exploring the many facets of love. “Valentine’s Day is a culturally-determined time to contemplate, celebrate, and take action based on a particular facet of love, but this type of love is only part of the story.” said Vazquez.

“’LoveLit’ asserts the power of Love and Light. It represents a sojourn in a particular style of presentation that brings to mind stained glass windows, neon signs, flat screen displays, and our multidimensional lives and loves. ‘Lit’ has multiple meanings: Illumination and literary content and contexts.”

Vazquez readily acknowledges that artists often benefit from a generous amount of donations of discarded materials. “I was the beneficiary of such a trove of materials that my sweetheart recently scored at work. His quick thinking to salvage these materials resulted in an expression of love that will hopefully touch the sensibilities and hearts of Indianapolis art collectors.”
