  • Further events across the borough to come

Residents and community groups across the borough are being encouraged to work with the council to love their neighbourhood by suggesting how areas can be made more attractive.

A £3 million scheme to invest in local infrastructure to brighten and uplift neighbourhoods will start this September.

The Mayor’s Neighbourhood Refresh programme will be rolled out across the borough over the next three years.

Beginning with the Weavers area of Bethnal Green, neighbourhoods are invited to suggest what should be done to make communities look more attractive.

Improvements could include more trees and green spaces, installation of cycle parking, better lighting, street art, pleasant resting areas; and safety and traffic calming measures.

The £1 million a year programme features consultations and street audits where residents, community leaders and council officers will walkabout and point out potential environmental or safety improvements.

Residents in areas being consulted on can also use an interactive online map to pinpoint where improvements should be made.

Mayor John Biggs said: “I want to make Tower Hamlets even safer, cleaner and greener. Residents know their neighbourhoods best and that is why we want to listen to suggestions about what would improve their part of the borough.

This could range from more green spaces, new lighting or bins to traffic calming measures. These practical improvements will make a real difference across Tower Hamlets so please do get involved”.

Mayor’s Neighbourhood Refresh is being introduced in areas where there have been reported road safety issues. It follows a pilot in Stepney, where the council is acting on resident’s suggestions by installing brighter lighting in Head Street; resurfacing parts of Jubilee and Bromley Street; as well as placing additional litter bins in Stepney Green Park, Wellesley and Ashfield Streets, and Albert Gardens.

We are also introducing traffic calming measures including road closures, speed humps and bollards.

Mayor John Biggs and Cllr Amina Ali, Cabinet Member for Environment will take part in a street audit, setting out from Jesus Green Park, Quilter Street, E2 at 1pm on Saturday September 23.

To register to take part, email towerhamlets.consultation@projectcentre.co.uk

Cllr Ali said: “Take part in a consultation or come along to a street audit near you, give us your ideas and we will review them and decide which are best to pursue.”

People in the area can register to take part in the street audit and suggest where we can make improvements.

Also, visit the Mayor’s Neighbourhood Refresh consultation stand in Jesus Green Park from 10am -12.30pm on the day, to look at proposals for the area and ask questions.

The Weavers consultation runs until September 30.
