In a special event on the eve of International Women’s Day, we remember those who have been forced to flee their homes and jobs.

About this event

Love & Solidarity for the 700

Within hours of the Taliban taking control of Kabul last August the lives of women journalists working in Afghanistan changed forever. 700 women journalists were working in Kabul in 2020. A survey* at the end of last year reported that just 39 remained.

In a special event on the eve of International Women’s Day, we remember those who have been forced to flee their homes and jobs. And we pay tribute to those who continue to work amid the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan.

Award winning journalists Yalda Hakim from the BBC, Alex Crawford from Sky News and Christina Lamb from The Sunday Times will discuss what they have witnessed reporting from Afghanistan over the past six months. They will also be joined by former Secretary of State for International Development, Rory Stewart as we discuss what the future holds for the country.

Reports and reflections from Afghan women journalists will be read as we pay tribute to them and their work.

All proceeds raised from the evening will go to supporting journalists still working in Afghanistan.

The event is being jointly hosted by Women in Journalism and the Yalda Hakim Foundation which supports the education & careers of women in Afghanistan.

Please join us for an important and thoughtful evening at The University of Westminster, Little Titchfield Street from 7pm
