Love and Wisdom in a Time of Stress.
Tue, March 28, 2017, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM CDT
JON KABAT-ZINN AND ELISSA EPEL will explore the practice of mindfulness and its applications in medicine, health care, psychology and beyond. Increasing scientific evidence is pointing to a number of molecular and cellular mechanisms and pathways whereby mindfulness (also understood as “heartfulness’) seems to exert its effects.
Jon will elaborate on mindfulness as a way of being and as a love affair with life itself and the short and longterm effects of MBSR (mindfulness-based stress reduction) on stress, pain, and chronic illness. Elissa will discuss her ground-breaking results on the effects of stress on biological aging and how they can be modulated and possibly reversed by regular mindfulness practice.
We will also point to exciting new evidence from the fields of neuroplasticity and epigenetics suggesting that even a relatively modest commitment to mindfulness as a practice can result in significant biological changes in the direction of greater well-being and health. We will highlight as well the promise of mindfulness in the domains of parenting, education, business, and other social institutions, and its implications for leadership and government in a time of planetary stress and turmoil.
