Event description
Protect children from child labor, including prostitution, in the Bario Haiti section of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

About this Event

The Rotary Club of the Ronkonkomas, Club #5115, District 7255 is partnering with the Puerto Plata Rotary Club, Club #6846, District 4060, through a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, GG2096722, to protect children from child labor, including prostitution, in the Bario Haiti section of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

Unfortunately, in the extreme poverty of this area, families will have the children go out at very early ages, some as young as 7 or 8, to "work," This includes child prostitution. Research shows that a child, on average, will bring in $30 to the family monthly.

Dove Youth Development, a grass roots organization formed in the community 10 years ago, is striving to make a difference by breaking this cycle of poverty. The school system in the Dominican Republic, was rated 143 out of 144 developed countries by the World Economic Forum's Competitiveness Report. It operates on a "split session" schedule, meaning children go to school for only half a day, either in the morning, or in the afternoon.

Dove has a program where the families sign a contract to:

1- Keep their kids attending in the public school

2- Attend AM or PM classes at Dove depending on their public school schedule

3-Parents volunteer a minimum of 1 hour per week at Dove, helping with food prep, cleaning and other duties.

The classes at Dove focus on English as a second language, computer, cosmetology and agricultural skills amongst others.

If the child and family fulfill their obligations, Dove provides food and clothing of at least $30 to each child per month, thereby allowing the child to stay in school. Dove also provides a uniform, which is required to be worn to attend the public school. Each child also gets a snack.

Dove currently has approximately 160 children enrolled. The goal is to protect children from the abuses of child labor and prostitution. Also, to provide them with an environment, where they can grow up as children are meant to, in families with love and support. This allows for the negating of the outside influences of evil.

Additionally, they need the skills to break this cycle of poverty. By learning employable skills, they are given an opportunity to become contributing citizens to their community. The sustainability of this project is generational. Decreasing the poverty and the social ills that accompany it, increased crime and incarceration, homelessness, the need for social safety nets and the strain on governmental and community resources.

This organization has been in the community for over 10 years. Three years ago, they procured a building which gives them a solid foundation in the community. This Global Grant would be used to upgrade the computer lab and cosmetology suite. This would enable them to increase the skill level as well as the number of children served. And remember, each child served represents an entire family that will forever be affected and benefit from this program.

Funds donated for a Global Grant are matched 50 cents on the dollar by the Rotary foundation.

EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE!!.
