to honor

Louis Reynal Norris

Born on February 2, 1942 Louis attended Greenvale Country Day, Eaglebrook School, Phelps School.

Thereafter he spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, before college, where he did air repair, working with a ground crew to keep the airplanes in flying condition at the MacDill Air Force Base from 1991 to 1994.

Louis was married in 1972 to Barbara Haneman for 15 years, and they traveled extensively, sailing all over the West Coast, Caribbean, and New England.  He worked as a single proprietor painter until 1990, when he then sailed his 58' sloop on a more regular basis.

Louis has been a member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club for 20 years.  He also supports:

  • The National Croquet Club,
  • The West Hampton Mallet Club, and
  • The New York Croquet Club,

Currently, Louis serves as the Director of The Floating the Apple in Manhattan, an orgaization that builds 26-foot wooden whitehall rowing boats (four-oared boats with a coxswain) used to encourage underprivileged Manhattan public school children to participate in the building process and competitive racing on the Hudson River and teaches them the benefits and joys of water sports.

Louis is also very supportive of many other local charities and organizations, including Save the Children, the Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary, the Oakcliff Sailing Academy, the Grenville Baker Boys and Girls Club, Raymond Hall an 18th Century house in Oyster Bay, the Oyster Bay Historical Society, the Nassau County Museum, and the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities.

Louis currently enjoys boat modeling, playing croquet, attending fundraisers, furniture restoration, reading, and still lives locally in beautiful Oyster Bay, New York.
