Washington, DC – Hundreds of young poets from DC, Maryland, and Virginia will meet at George Washington University on May 4-5, 2013 for Louder Than a Bomb – DMV Teen Poetry Slam Festival (LTAB-DMV), a regional high school team poetry slam program of the nonprofit Split This Rock. Each school brings a team of 4-6 poets to perform individual and group poems, written, revised, rehearsed, and memorized by the teens themselves in after-school poetry clubs. The poems are judged by audience members and the top point-earners advance to Semi-Finals and Finals, where the LTAB-DMV Champion School is crowned Sunday evening.

Bringing teens together across lines of race, class, religion, and neighborhood, LTAB-DMV is a friendly competition that emphasizes self-expression and community using poetry, oral storytelling, hip-hop, and spoken word performance. The teams of youth poets work after school throughout the year with guidance from teaching artists and coaches, crafting original poems and rehearsing performances that bring poetry to life on stage. Based on, and in partnership with the Chicago-based youth slam of the same name, Louder Than a Bomb is all about valuing and applauding youth voice and the power of creative imagination to create change within individuals and communities.

In addition to the slam competition, there will be featured performances, poetry workshops, open mics, film screenings, and a family block party, all open to the public. Witness the passion, courage, creativity, and real-life stories of our talented DMV area high school youth.
