Guided driving tour of the Underground Railroad on OId Washington Road from Sunshine Burger, Maryland to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

About this Event

As the state of Maryland seeks to increase their portfolio of Network to Freedom sites throughout the state, learn about the unmarked landmarks and historic sites on Georgia Avenue and Old Washington Road associated with the Underground Railroad along a 50 mile stretch of the historic thoroughfare running from Montgomery County to Howard County to Carroll County and into Pennsylvania's Adams County.

Stops will include historic court houses, cemeteries, churches, jail houses, mills, safe houses and taverns that remain extant along this route.

The tour will begin an Sunshine General Store at the junction of Georgia Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue and conclude in the historic town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Upon ticket purchase, a site map and directions will be provided. Tour will be limited to six to eight cars, with car pooling encouraged.

All sites are accessible by car, with free parking available.

Participants will be able to stay in their car and read from support materials and/or listen to the historic interpretation offered at each site. Each site will will have 5 to 15 minutes of historic explanation and/or interpretation.

Tour will be led by John Muller, author of Frederick Douglass in Washington, D.C.: The Lion of Anacostia (2012) and Mark Twain in Washington, D.C.: The Adventures of a Capital Correspondent (2013).

Muller has presented widely throughout the DC-Baltimore metropolitan area at venues including the Library of Congress, Newseum, Politics and Prose, American Library in Paris and local universities. As well, over the past five years he has led historic walking tours in Washington, Baltimore, Western Maryland, West Virginia and throughout Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Muller has been featured on C-SPAN’s BookTV and C-SPAN’s American History TV, as well as in the pages of daily, weekly and student newspapers in Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Western Maryland. He has been regularly featured on the broadcast and radio airwaves of WDVM (Hagerstown), NBC4 (Washington), WPFW, WAMU, WYPR and Delmarva Public Radio.
