Event description
Uncovering the Lost Original Cemeteries of Los Angeles.

About this Event

Los Angeles has a terrible history of willfully forgetting the past, and this is most ghastly demonstrated in the way the dead of early Los Angeles history have been displaced in the name of progress as the city expanded.

We will be exploring the sites and stories of the four original cemeteries of Los Angeles which were in some cases relocated, in other cases just built right over.

  • The Campo Santo at the Placita Church; the once forgotten Catholic burial site of many indigenous people and early immigrants
  • Fort Moore Hill; the forgotten original Protestant burial site, the first non-Catholic cemeteries
  • Old Jewish Cemetery; the lost original Jewish cemetery near Chavez Ravine, near the site of Dodger Stadium
  • Old Calvary Cemetery; the old Catholic cemetery, and its former chapel site that has also become important to the historic community of Little Italy

We will be exploring these sites with a special emphasis of the often untold multi-cultural history of early Los Angeles.

Have you ever wondered why so many Los Angeles schools and public buildings are rumored to be haunted? What does real history reveal about origins of these unusual stories at these spooky sites? This is the perfect tour for historical buffs and haunted history enthusiasts alike!

This is an entirely walking tour, the entire circuit is about 3 miles that will take us from the Los Angeles Plaza up to the old Cemetery Ravine – near Chavez Ravine, just down the hill from Dodger Stadium – and back.

---

We will be meeting next to the LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes gift shop called “La Tienda,” located at 501 N. Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90012, as our first site to explore is located just steps away next to the Placita church. We will start checking in participant to start our walking tour promptly at 12-noon.

PUBLIC TRANSIT: We recommend that people come by public transit. You can take any one of the major Metro Rail trains and MTA buses to Union Station. Our meeting spot is just two blocks away from Union Station, near the Plaza de Los Angeles State ParkOlvera Street, near the front outside entrance of the Plaza de Cultura y Artes near the outside sign for the bookstore called "La Tienda."

PARKING: Ample parking is available in public lots in the surrounding area of the Plaza. Parking rates vary. La Plaza de Cultura y Artes' parking lot is located at the lot located at Arcadia and Spring Streets at 171 Arcadia Street, entrance on Arcadia. L.A. County Parking Lot 15 is located at 527 N. Spring Street at Avenida Cesar Chavez, entrance on Spring. Main Street parking is strictly prohibited. Union Station also has all-day parking available; though it is limited.

The total walking distance is just shy of 3 miles round trip, walking at an easy pace, though we do have stairs at one point in our hike and a significant incline at another location to get near the base of Dodger Stadium; it is important that everyone signing up for this tour be able to walk long distances and stand for extended periods of time. An average tour tends to take about 3 hours. We encourage everyone to bring refreshments and snacks; though everyone must bring water, as its important to stay hydrated.

COVID-19 POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: Due to the coronavirus we are taking precautions in order keep you and our staff safe. In accordance with city and county policy we do require all attendees to wear a mask covering one’s mouth and nose during the duration of the tour, especially when within 6-feet of other people. We are also required to maintain social distancing of 6-feet between families, while we encourage family units we ask to remain together; this will enable us to maximize the ability for everyone to hear the presentation and see the visuals. We are also required to limit the size of this groups to 25% of our capacity and so each tour date will fill-up very quickly; do sign-up right away before we fill-up, as we will not be able to add addition walk-on guests the day of the tour. We will be adding more date to our monthly line-up to accommodate more guests.

To help people social distance we will be sending you links to both our guided tour e-book of historic pictures to enjoy, as well as a link to our audio app we use to help people listen to our live tour transmitted and amplified by your smartphone to help you maintain a healthy social distance and even explore our site semi-independently or even shop from vendors, without missing a single picture or word from our presentation!

Ticket sales from this event go to support the space and programming for the Boyle Heights History Tours and Studios; where we promote the historical storytelling of Boyle Heights and greater Los Angeles, as told by the people of barrio. Thank you for your generous support!

REMINDERS: This is a special event; there are no cancellations or refunds; if you are felling ill please stay home and contact us to arrange to attend a future tour.
