Over the next few weeks, we're hosting info sessions for folks who want to be part of San Fernando Valley Mini Maker Faire. DTLA folks, join us on Thursday night at Maker City LA!
Hackerspace Los Angeles (HSLA) has been granted a license to host the 1st Annual San Fernando Valley Mini Maker Faire (SFVMMF). It will take place on October 7, 2017. There have been two previous Maker Fair events in the Los Angeles (Pasadena & DTLA) area over the years but none of them have been able to catch the interest and continued support to be an annual tradition for our local maker community. Hackerspace Los Angeles (HSLA) has taken steps to build a team and establish a process that will make SFVMMF a great success in its first iteration and for years to come.
One of the core principles of Maker Faire is the celebration of the local maker community in which the Maker Faire is hosted. As such, we will be including a wide variety of local makers from the Los Angeles area. SFVMMF has set a goal of 100 exhibitors/presenters and 5000+ attendees. The makeup of the group of xhibitors/presenters is as follows:
• Minimum of 75% local makers
• Minimum of 50% hands-on/interactive exhibits/workshops
• No more than 20% of commercial exhibits.
• With a population's makeup of slightly over 50% women and 70% minorities, we want to reflect that as much as possible in the composition of makers at SFVMMF
SFVMMF will celebrate LA’s industrial, technical and cultural heritage of making!
“Making STEAM” is the theme of SFVMMF. All attendees will be able to explore making in its many aspects and young attendees, in particular, will see firsthand what a STEAM career can help them achieve.
SFVMMF will have the participation of local makers, makerspaces, hackerspaces, and other groups that will showcase their creations. They will offer hands-on activities and information on how you can get started in getting your ideas into practice.
Workshops and presentation will teach and inspire attendees to follow their DIY bliss and get in the making train. From learning, how to solder electronics components, basic wood, leather, and couture skills to how to code and program. Crafting and artistic booths will compliment a program that will cater to all your interests in making. We will host a series of talks, interviews, and film previews from independent local talent that will cover a wide range are of interests for the maker community.
With a long and rich history in the aerospace, automobile, movie, and manufacturing industries, SFVMMF will be showcasing the local contributions that Los Angeles has made to this fields. We will install exhibits that will offer access to individuals that make it all happen and attendees will have the opportunity to meet and get to know these individuals that use their STEAM skills to make magic happen.
SFVMMF will present attractions that will encourage community participation. One of the ideas we have is looking into the possibility to hold a Guinness world record breaking "making" activity at the event. Other ideas include a Nerdy Derby race, Egg Drop Competition, Hackathon, Oobleck Walk, cosplay, and others.
