We invite you to join preservation leaders and advocates from across the country to highlight the American Latino Theme Study and to discuss the importance of identifying and preserving Latino heritage in California. Prominent scholars of the American Latino experience will join, Jon Jarvis, Director of the National Park Service, to provide up-to-date information on what you can do to recognize and save places of Latino heritage in your community. This is a free event which will also include lunch, screening of a PBS special on Ruben Salazar, a tour of the Chicano Moratorium March and concurrent workshop on historic preservation. Your RSVP will guarantee you at seat at the Forum.

Nominating Historic Sites 101 (Concurrent)
Latino History Preservation in the 21st Century Workshop – Moderated by Stephanie Smith Toothman, Ph.D., Associate Director for Cultural Resources. Expert panelists from local, state, and federal heritage preservation agencies and organizations will provide an overview of their respective roles in heritage preservation. This will be an interactive workshop where participants can ask questions about their own projects/sites. RSVPs are necessary in order to insure that there are sufficient seats for all participants.

Chicano Moratorium March (Concurrent)
The Eastside Heritage Consortium will lead a bus tour of the historic civil rights march and protest against the Vietnam War was held in East Los Angeles on August 29, 1970. The tour will be of the march route and each participant will receive a brochure with information about this historic event. Seating is limited to two buses and will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. A portion of the bus tour includes walking (approximately 6-8 city blocks). Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

National Park Service and American Latino Scholars Expert Panel


The American Latino Scholars Expert Panel was established under the auspices of the National Park System Advisory Board. The expert panel provided advice on the conceptual frame and structure of American Latinos and the Making of the United States: A Theme Study, and advises the Board on engaging with Latino American communities to document their stories through National Historic Landmarks and the National Register of Historic Places, and to enhance the interpretation and educational programs in national parks.
