The London Clean Modelling Group presents a workshop for the Clean Language Community

About this event

“Looking Through” – Thinking like Gregory Bateson

This year is the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Steps to an Ecology of Mind by Gregory Bateson. Bateson's ideas have been influential in many fields including Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling.

James Lawley says: "David Grove was a great admirer of Gregory Bateson and Gregory's *way of thinking* has had a massive influence on my approach to all things Clean. Gregory's ideas were groundbreaking enough, but it was his *way of seeing the workings of the world* that I have spent 30 years learning to acquire. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to share some of what has been most important for my development, and the development of the field. "

In this one-day workshop for the Clean Language community, James Lawley will take us on an exploration of Thinking like Gregory.

James' focus will be on how Gregory's way of “looking through” the foreground to what’s happening in the background meant he could come up with far-reaching ideas such as:

• Levels of learning

• Patterns that connect - thinking systemically

• An ecology of mind

• Double binds

James will explore how Gregory’s thinking helps us model humans being human, and how to facilitate ourselves and others to draw on the wisdom in what Bateson called “a sacred unity”.

There will be plenty of “looking through” activities and stretching experiences to take on and apply Gregory's style of thinking.

Note: It is helpful that you have at least a basic understanding of Clean Language i.e. able to use clean questions.

If you aren't familiar with Gregory's work this clip will give you a taste.

About the London Clean Modelling Group

The LCMG is a practice group located in London which was set up more than 20 years ago to bring together learners and enthusiasts in the field of Clean Language to practice together. The group meets on a monthly basis and over the course of the global pandemic has been meeting on line. As we progress towards more regular meetings 'back in the room' we wanted to offer an opportunity to be together for a full face to face workshop.

We are delighted to invite you to come spend the day with us to explore the exciting topic of Gregory Bateson's ideas and thinking. The LCMG is run by Kat Elliot, Greta Irving and Gyda Jonsdottir.
