Looking for Your Mishpocha In All the Right Places: How to Dig Up Your Jewish Family Roots

Vivian Kahn

June 8, 2019, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

This talk will offer an introduction to Jewish family research highlighting the increasingly vast resources available online and on the ground both in the US and overseas. Vivian will discuss some of the issues that are unique to researching Jewish families as well as techniques for addressing them.

Vivian is a senior volunteer with JewishGen <www.jewishgen.org>, the largest on-line resource for Jewish family research with millions of Jewish records.  She leads JewishGen’s Hungarian research group and is also the primary liaison to the organization’s regional research groups.  Since 1992, when she began investigating her Hungarian roots, Vivian has traced her own family back to the early 17th century and located cousins living throughout the US and  abroad including Canada, Hungary, Switzerland, Israel, Australia, and Austria. She has presented workshops on Jewish genealogy and, especially, Hungarian Jewish family research, at l conferences, for Jewish groups and adult education programs, and in 2015 in Sighetu, Romania, at a gathering of Sighet descendants. She has also written several articles for Avotaynu, the International Review for Jewish Genealogy. Since she began researching her own family from pre-Trianon Hungary, she has identified and used a wide range of archival, print, and on-line resources and has also visited Hungary,  Slovakia, Romania, and Israel to research her family and help clients searching for their own Hungarian roots..  When she isn't engrossed in family research, Vivian is an Oakland-based land use planning and development consultant and teaches land use planning for University of California extension programs at Berkeley, Davis, and Los Angeles.  She was previously Deputy Director and Planning Manager for the City of Berkeley. Vivian is a native of New York City and a graduate of the City College of New York.  She also studied at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the Pratt Institute School of Architecture's Department of City and Regional Planning.
