Betsy Hiteshew (SCC-CAAEYC President 1977-1979)

Betsy was born in New Jersey in 1929 and grew up in New York City.Betsy majored in Music in college and later was lucky enough to learn about the Bank Street College of Education, just a few blocks from her home in downtown NYC, and, also one of the very few institutions in the country offering an M.A. in Early Childhood Education at that time! Betsy graduated in the early 1950’s, moved with her husband to Southern California, birthed and raised two girls, and taught ECE at Santa Monica College for 27 years. Once again, Betsy was lucky enough to be introduced to SCC-CAAEYC by her dear friend and ECE pioneer Docia Zavitkovsky. Now at 91, Betsy has been active in SCC-CAAEYC for 50+ years and it has been a joyful ride!

Pat Gardner (SCC-CAAEYC President 1987-1989)

Pat’s adventures in ECE began at Santa Monica College, teaching, supervising students, and joining the activities of the local chapter of AEYC. She co-authored two early childhood texts, served as president of both the local chapter of AEYC and of SCC-CAAEYC (Formerly SCAEYC). Traveling to various European countries, Pat studied how the culture of the country was reflected in child development practices. A second important area of study was the use of computers in school settings for young children. Her retirement years have involved lecturing, traveling, choral singing, and stage management for the local theater group. Married for 68 years, Pat has a son and super daughter-in-law.

Renée Martinez (SCC-CAAEYC President 1993-1995)

Renée retired as President of Los Angeles City College (LACC) in 2017. In that role, she led initiatives that included enhancing communication with campus faculty, staff and students on issues such as construction, accreditation and budget. She oversaw the construction of bond projects and worked closely with the LACC Foundation. Previously, Renée served as Vice President of Workforce Education (Academic Affairs) at East Los Angeles College and as Career Technical Dean, East Los Angeles College. During her time at East Los Angeles College, she also held the positions of Director/Associate Dean of Student Services, Department Chair, Family & Consumer Studies, Professor of Child Development, and Director of the Child Development Center. Renée began her career as an Early Childhood Education teacher.
