Event description

Description

This year the Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret is participating in London History Day on 31 May, 2018. We have prepared a walk and an after hours talk for the day.

A Walk and After Hours Talk

Walk: "The Nests of Satan"
Time: 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm, £5 per person (max. 15)
The term Dutch Courage goes back to the seventeenth century, a time when there was one drinking establishment for every 14 householders in the Borough. Southwark's swilling history goes back much, much further and this walk (or crawl) will look back at the glory days of alehouses, breweries, inn and taverns, those 'nurseries of all riot, excess and idleness', which provide a unique insight into the social history of the area.

The After Hours Talk: "The Courage of Victorian Surgeons and Their Patients"
Time: 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, £ 6.50 per person (max. 35)

Presented in the original 1822 operating theatre of St Thomas' Hospital, observe from the same position as a medical student at the time a mock demonstration of surgery before anaesthetics. Operations were limited and had to be quick, and without hand-washing and basic hygiene, the chance of later infection and death was high. The courage of the surgeons and their patients were tested throughout. This event will be followed by a complimentary drink in the Herb Garret.

Please, purchase the correct ticket for the event that you want!
