London DevOps November 2012
Thursday, 29 November 2012 from 18:30 to 21:00 (GMT)
After a long hiatus the London DevOps meetup is back at Forward Internet group in Camden in November.
Doors open at 6:30pm where beer and pizza will be available, talks will start around 7pm.
Simon Hildrew has agreed to give a version of a talk from velocity earlier this year
Winning the Metrics Battle (finally)
The Guardian didn’t set out to have a full time metrics and monitoring role, but when we interviewed someone who fitted that role we realised that was a missing piece in our strategy. The best thing we’ve done since is listen to him and become obsessed with metrics and monitoring.
In this talk I am going to tell the story of our mistakes and successes in trying to make this a reality. I’ll talk about the products we evaluated, those we tried and failed to use and those we have currently settled on (ganglia, graphite and some custom software).
Practical Logstash - Beyond the Basics
Tom has implemented a central logging system at several companies. and contributed patches to logstash. He'll be giving a practical run-through of the real logstash installation at TIM Group - processing over 50 million messages a day; used to not just store log data, but also produce application metrics and health alerting. He'll discuss practical log message design, shipping architecture, Elasticsearch optimisation and how to make your log pipeline reliable and highly scaleable.
