Event description
You're invited to San Francisco's community preparedness fair honoring the 30th Anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake!

About this Event

Supervisor Catherine Stefani, in partnership with City and State Agencies, preparedness organizations and community partners, cordially invites you to attend

The Loma Prieta 30th Anniversary Community Preparedness Fair

When: Thursday, October 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Where: Marina Green (West end -- Marina Green at Cervantes)

The evening of October 17, 1989 was a fateful one for residents across the Bay Area. Many residents were just sitting down to watch the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics play in the World Series when everything began to shake. Within seconds, the Marina district experienced severe shaking -- the strongest felt across San Francisco. Apartment buildings collapsed, water mains broke, and soon fire was spreading throughout the community. In true San Francisco spirit, Marina residents sprang into action, helping their neighbors find safety and supporting our first responders as they worked tirelessly to stop the fires from spreading across the neighborhood.

Over the course of the next few days, the fires died out and the community came together like it never had before. Neighbors hosted the displaced, others volunteered at nearby shelters, and local restaurants served meals to those who couldn’t feed themselves. It was community at its best.

In the months and years to follow, the residents championed the creation of the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT), which is now a nationally recognized institution. Since 1989, San Francisco has spent over $20 billion on seismic resiliency projects, including investing in systems and programs that will help us protect our vulnerable residents and communities when the next incident strikes.

This eternal commitment to advancing our individual and collective readiness is why Supervisor Stefani is honored to host The Loma Prieta 30th Anniversary Community Preparedness Fair on Thursday, October 17th from 3pm to 6pm at the Marina Green.

The fair will feature:

  • An earthquake simulator
  • A first responder apparatus display (including fire, police and sheriff resources)
  • Over twenty agencies offering preparedness techniques and programs that attendees can participate in to protect themselves, their household and neighbors

So please join your neighbors on October 17th from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the West end of the Marina Green for an afternoon of community remembrance and looking toward resilience. See you there!
