Description

*New Speaker Added!* Linda Darling Hammond, President & CEO of the Learning Policy Institute

Measuring the effectiveness of our public schools is important. However, what we measure, how we measure, and then how we respond to that information are all choices to be made by the state, districts, schools, and communities. The school accountability system communicates our most important shared values regarding the schools our young people rely on. Our current choices have caused many users to be dissatisfied with the system. As a result, there is limited data supporting the idea that our current system has moved our state any closer to ensuring quality school opportunities for all Colorado students.

Beginning in January of 2018, CEI’s President and CEO Rebecca Holmes and Senior Partner Elliott Asp wrote a series of papers exploring different approaches to accountability. Since then, we have been working with Colorado’s school and district leaders, asking them to share their ideas for innovation at the local level. We believe these ideas could inspire the next generation of school accountability in Colorado.

This November, we invite you to meet these local school and district leaders, as well as national experts in the field, who are shifting the way they think about accountability. We'll discuss the next phase of what we measure in schools, how we measure it, and innovative structures for school accountability that promote community engagement and continuous improvement.

Speakers include:

  • Jack Schneider, Massachusetts Consortium for Innovative Education Assessment. Learn more about Jack here.
  • District leaders from the Student Centered Accountability Program. Learn more about S-CAP here.
  • Colorado school leaders participating in the Opportunity Measures project. Learn more about the project here: Opportunity Measure Demonstration Project Overview.

Agenda:

In the morning, we will spark discussions on broad ideas around innovation in school accountability. We invite state policymakers, district and school leaders, and K-12 partners to learn from national and state experts, as well as Colorado’s district and school leaders who are leading the way in innovative accountability practices.

The afternoon will be more narrowly tailored for district and school leaders, who will have an opportunity to learn from and network with each other and national experts to help accelerate and deepen their thinking on innovation at the local level.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided and should accomodate most dietary restrictions. If you have any specific requests, please let us know.
