The Local Government Liberty Summit is a brand-new forum for Central Texans to learn about liberty-minded solutions to the challenges we now face. All local leaders serving in office, working as staff, or wanting to make a difference are welcome to attend.

This daylong interactive event will showcase local government experts and officials—including Austin City Councilmember Ellen Troxclair—speaking about the challenges affecting the Central Texas region, the opportunities to advance free-market principles locally, and the lessons learned during the last legislative session. 

WHAT: The Local Government Liberty Summit, hosted by the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Think Local Liberty project and the Texas Local Government Center.

AGENDA

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.             PANEL: Tactics and Strategies for Effective Local Governance

This panel will discuss tactics that individuals—be they councilmembers, staff members, or interested citizens—can employ to be most effective in advocating for sensible small-government policies in their communities.

12:00 p.m. - 12:10 p.m.             Brief Break

12:10 p.m. - 1:20 p.m.               KEYNOTE: Austin Councilmember Ellen Troxclair

Lunch will be served to attendees. Councilwoman Ellen Troxclair of Austin will be presenting about her time as a conservative-leaning councilmember on the Austin City Council. She will address issues she has championed, issues facing the city, and lessons learned from her time on the council followed by Q&A.

1:20 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.                 Brief Break

1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.                 OPEN FORUM: Problem-Solving for Small Towns

This panel will briefly discuss issues facing small towns specifically, and then transition into an open forum for attendees to ask questions of the panelists so as to have an opportunity to learn from their peers.

2:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.                 Brief Break

3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.                 PANEL: The New Local Government Landscape

This panel will discuss recent changes to state law regarding localities from the 2017 session / special session, the new paradigm that has emerged, and what changes may be in store in 2019 and beyond.
