Event description

Description

Join us for a killer summer Happy Hour AND learn the “how to’s” of mixing classic summer cocktails with some of our favorite spring and summer ingredients, a few "Ark of Taste ingredients, and a few “re-usable” ingredients (stems and other items you thought were waste)! Join Local Foods, along with partners FIG Drinks & Slow Food Chciago, to explore classic cocktailing, tinctures, and mixers from FIG beverage manager, Ryan Herendeen. Explore new ways to use classic ingredients (herbs, savory and sweet seasonal options), ways to incorporate fruit and herb infused syrups, and spiced and savory bitters! Slow Food Chicago will also be on hand to share more about their programs, about Ark of Taste ingredients, and about supporting local farmers and foods. The class will include a cocktail upon arrival and samples of class drinks as well as light refreshments from the Local Foods team!

About FIG: FIG Catering | FIG Drinks is one of the most respected catering teams in Chicago - with a focus on intimate, locally focused events that utilize fresh, seasonal ingredients with an emphasis on supporting local farmers and sustainability. Ryan Herendeen, FIG's Beverage Director, is a key player on their team and has helped build a curated cocktail program that they are well known for!

About Ryan: After dropping out of seminary, living in Africa for a year, finishing a philosophy degree, and mastering all things cheese and alcohol for over ten years at various Whole Foods Markets in Chicago, Ryan took the next logical life step by becoming FIG Catering and Drinks Beverage Director. He espouses a commitment to craft alcohol producers, use of seasonal produce from the table to the glass, and finding every possible way to re-use ingredients and reduce waste. When not at work, Ryan is busy teaching his toddler how to kick a soccer ball and handle himself on the dance floor (neither of which his dad ever had a handle on, so good luck, kid).

About Slow Food Chicago: Slow Food Chicago is a member-supported educational non-profit organization advocating for good, clean, and fair food for all. Slow Food Chicago is run by an all-volunteer Board of Directors comprised of passionate, intersectional individuals along with a network of volunteers who help with operations and events in the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. As one of the largest chapters of Slow Food USA, Slow Food Chicago strives to promote the connection between the plate and the planet from the City of Chicago to the rural farmlands of Illinois and the Midwest.

About Ark of Taste: The Ark of Taste is a living catalog of delicious and distinctive foods facing extinction. By identifying and championing these foods we keep them in production and on our plates. Since 1996, more than 1,100 products from over 50 countries have been added to the International Ark of Taste. Over 200 of these foods are from the USA, and we are always seeking more edible treasures to include. The Ark of Taste is a tool for farmers, ranchers, fishers, chefs, grocers, educators and consumers to seek out and celebrate our country's diverse biological, cultural and culinary heritage. When it comes to the Ark of Taste, our motto is "Eat It To Save It!" The more people who grow, buy and cook with Ark of Taste products, the more aware we all are of our food biodiversity -- and the more likely we are to preserve the rich variety of our food system.

The class includes: welcome cocktail, tasting samples, demo, and light refreshments. *Additional beverages will be available for purchase!
