Lo-Fi Reveries: Small Files for a Small World!

Kicking off the sixth Online Small File Media Festival is Lo-Fi Reveries: Small Files for a Small World, a roundtable discussion featuring a global cohort of eco-media filmmakers. The 2025 Small File Media Festival programming grows out of founder Laura Marks’s Guggenheim Fellowship, Small Files for a Small World.

Date: November 10, 2025

Time: 10:00 AM PST

Location: Online/Zoom

Our panel discussion features workshop leaders Zaki Rezwan (Dhaka, Bangladesh), Mena El Shazly (Cairo, Egypt), and Mehdi Shiri (Tehran, Iran), along with SFMF Founder and Creative Director Laura U. Marks, who will speak to the challenges, joys, and experiments of making small-file media art outside of Western infrastructures. The discussion will be moderated by media artist and scholar Dr. Radek Przedpełski (Trinity College Dublin).

Small-file media thrives in places where electricity and internet access are limited. This year, Marks and members of the SFMF team trained artists from Mexico City, Tehran, Dhaka, Vancouver, and Cairo in the arts of the small file. The films from these international workshops reflect on place through surprising lo-fi aesthetics and moving storylines. Frame by frame, they take risks in both politics and art, showing that cinema doesn’t have to be big to be beautiful.

Graciously hosted by our friends at Cineworks!
