About this event

The International Lutheran Laymen’s League (LLL), founded in 1917, is the parent organization of Lutheran Hour Ministries which has, since 1930, faithfully resourced the Body of Christ in its mission and broadcasted the Gospel in the US and around the world via radio, television, and the internet. For the last 70 years, the LLL SoCal has been the sponsoring organization for the Lutheran Hour float, the only Christ-proclaiming entry in New Year’s Day Rose Parade.

Each fall the Pacific Southwest District – Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (PSD) partners with LLL-SoCal to provide individuals and congregations in Southern California with a mission-focused conference to equip and motivate them for greater engagement in the Mission of God. In 2022, the conference will include a focus on the new Lutheran version of Rooted, produced through a partnership between PSD and Mariners Church, Irvine.

In February 2017, Pastors Bil Hood, Dominic Rivkin, and Mike Gibson traveled with Mariner’s Global Engagement Pastor, Christian Mungai, to Nairobi, Kenya to learn from Pastor Muriithi Wanjau and the Mavuno Church, the creators of Mizizi (“Rooted” in Swahili), which later grew into the Rooted movement within the United States.

Rooted is a Bible-based, small group, hands-on, 10-week discipleship journey that is transforming people, congregations around the world, and Lutheran congregations in PSD and around the country. It serves many congregations as an entry pathway into the church and a membership class that covers the basics of the Christian faith and life. The brilliance of Rooted is that it was never intended to be used as a stand-alone curriculum. It is part of a way of doing outreach and church called the Transformational Loop. This “simple church” model offers an easy to understand and implement method to guide a congregation in ministry and mission to its community. It also serves as an excellent method for church planting and a resource for revitalization.

At the Mavuno Church in Kenya, the Transformational Loop and Rooted is augmented by a three-year cycle that assists congregations to focus on a singular outreach target for an entire year: (1) family, (2) workplace, and (3) the greater community. During the year church members are trained to reach into these groups, have faith conversations within their relationships, and partner with their congregation as it offers gathering events to which they can introduce others to Christ, to the church, and to eventually ask the all-important question: “Have you done Rooted yet?” Through the non-threatening pathway of Rooted, people experience Christ, faith, community, service, the church, and outreach.

The 2022 conference will bring all these concepts together in a one day gathering and introduce participants to the movement of the Holy Spirit in the Global South (Africa, Latin America, Asia), the Transformational Loop, Rooted – Lutheran Edition, and a developing 3-year cycle to equip individuals and congregations to engage their families, workplaces, and greater community. PSD is pleased to announce a partnership with Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) which has, through their relationship with the Barna Group, created excellent resources for congregations to focus on these three annual outreach targets as they implement Rooted – Lutheran Edition, and work the Transformational Loop.
