"Living with Dignity and the Crisis of Poverty
in Otsego and Delaware Counties"

Saturday, October 5th from 2:00-5:00PM

Foothills Performing Arts Center, 24 Market St., Oneonta, NY

Sponsored by Opportunities for Otsego, Inc.

Official estimates of poverty are startling across the United States with 41 million people living below the poverty line. Our communities in Otsego and Delaware counties are a microcosm of what’s happening in our country and around the world. The purpose of this forum is to create public awareness and build advocacy for those whose lives are impacted by poverty in our communities.

Congressman Antonio Delgado (NY-19), Gary Herzig (Mayor, City of Oneonta), Dan Maskin (Opportunities for Otsego), Karen Joest (SUNY Oneonta), Joyce St. George (Democratic Rural Conference), JoAnne Bragonier (Catholic Charities Housing), the Rev. Cynthia Walton-Leavitt (First United Presbyterian Church), Timothy Peters (Otsego Rural Housing Assistance), and Wayne Mellor (Agricultural Development Consultant), are among the panelists who will share their knowledge and insights on the pillars of poverty. Jeri Wachter, Executive Producer of the “Faces of Rural Poverty” documentary, will moderate. The forum will address current issues in health and wellness, education, housing, the environment, wages, and transportation.

Audience participation is invited for a discussion about the extraordinary challenges of living under the crisis of poverty and the impact of inequity on our families, friends and neighbors. Bring your voices and join in the effort to seek solutions in the fight against complex, social and economic inequalities, which continue to grow, and to bring about real change to the lives of the poor in Otsego and Delaware counties.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to seeing you.

“All persons have the right to live their lives in dignity. Dignity means being able to independently shape one’s life and one’s future, to draw on one’s own experience and capabilities, and to live as a respected member of one’s social group and society as a whole. To live a life with dignity, people must be able to satisfy their basic needs and to exercise their political, civil, social, cultural, and economic rights.” SDC
