The Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley invites you to Living Time: Art and Life After 'Art-Into-Life'. Hosted to coincide with the UC Berkeley Art Museum’s spring exhibition The Possible (see below), this gathering brings together artists, curators, and scholars from a variety of art fields and regions of the world to think about the connections between and boundaries separating "art" and "life." How has this relationship changed over the course of the 20th century--from Constructivism to Happenings to our contemporary moment? What is "Life" in today's bio-political sphere? What happens when the freedoms and interventions of art-into-life experiments are absorbed in a contemporary "experience economy"? How do different histories of governance--socialist, liberal democratic, neoliberal, communist--affect the place and character of time-based art? How do different art forms respond when life is lived under conditions of austerity? And how might a cross-arts gathering on such questions open us to new avenues of possibility and coalition-building? A complete symposium schedule and additional information will be available on our website soon.

Living Time is co-sponsored by the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the History of Art Department, The Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Department of Scandinavian, and the Philosophy Department at UC Berkeley.

The themes of Living Time resonate wonderfully with the goals and forms on offer in BAM/PFA's exhibition The Possible, and we strongly encourage ARC's community to attend and participate.

Mission and History

Berkeley Arts + Design features, fortifies, and mobilizes existing excellence in the arts and design at Berkeley, while fostering dynamic collaboration, innovation, and public access across all arts and design fields, on campus and in public life.

At a time when many tout the importance of ‘creativity,’ UC Berkeley’s arts and design landscape offers a distinctive and robust context for creative experiment, one enriched by the scientific and cultural wealth of a world-class public research university, one propelled by an historic public mission and a commitment to access and social impact. The University offers degrees ranging across music, visual arts, literature, film, theater, dance, architecture, and multiple design fields. With numerous internationally renowned museums, galleries, and presenting organizations, over 200 student clubs devoted to the arts and design, and an enviable roster of free public lectures and cultural events each day, the University of California, Berkeley is mobilizing new generations of creative leaders, arts audiences, and engaged citizens.

Established in 2015, Berkeley Arts + Design is a campus-wide initiative within the office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for the Arts and Design, one that serves arts and design departments, schools, colleges, presenters, and student clubs. From Art Practice to Landscape Architecture, Cal Performance to Botanical Gardens, Holloway Reading Series to Art, Technology and Culture Colloquium, Student Musical Activities to Innovative Design Club, Arts + Design cultivates cross-campus conversations, strengthens student experiences, propels new courses and academic offerings, supports public events, and fuels collaborative faculty research in the creative sphere.
