Event description
This Building Blocks of Science® unit provides students the opportunity to investigate and observe what plants and animals need to survive

About this Event

In the module, Living Things and Their Needs, students investigate and observe what plants and animals need to survive, identify living and non-living things, and understand environmental impact. Students work with a single plant, pumpkin, as they explore the concept that plants go through stages as they document their plant’s growth. Students also work to understand the structure and function of a living organism, the bess beetle, as they investigate its habitat and identify what they need to survive. Students observe different environments and identify relationships among plants, animals, humans, and their surroundings.

During this course, participants will:

  • Engage in three-dimensional learning for developing disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and cross cutting concepts
  • Participate as an adult learner to experience investigations and science and engineering content
  • Share teaching strategies to support literacy and inquiry-based learning
  • Identify the learning goals in the module and how the investigations support the Big Ideas
  • Examine assessment opportunities
  • Develop notebook as a resource
