Description

Japan House is honored to announce the visit of Noboru Fujinuma, a Living National Treasure of Japan. Living National Treasures are individuals certified as Preservers of Important Intangible Cultural Properties by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, as based on Japan’s Law for the Preservation of Cultural Properties.

Mr. Fujinuma is a renowned contemporary basket artist in Japan. It is a tremendous honor to have an artist of this stature visiting Japan House and the University of Illinois campus. Mr. Fujunima will present a public talk on his artwork Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 5:30 pm at Japan House. The talk will be followed by a tea ceremony performed by Professor Emeritus Shozo Sato. The presentation is free and open to the public. No tickets are required, seating is first come, first served.

Mr. Fujinuma will also be give a Chabana basket workshop on Tuesday, September 24, 2017.

Mr. Fujinuma was granted Living National Treasure status in both woodwork and bamboowork. Born in 1945, he is one of the most important bamboo artists currently active. His work has been the subject of several exhibitions, and in fact, Mr. Fujinuma will be in the US at this time because of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Japanese Bamboo Art: The Abbey Collection, through February 4, 2018. He was also the subject of an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, Fujinuma Noboru: Master of Bamboo, held in 2011. He did not begin his study of traditional Japanese crafts until the 1970’s, but his career as an artist truly took off when he received the Tokyo Governor’s Prize at the 39th Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition in 1992, before being named a National Living Treasure in 2012.

We are grateful to Professor Emeritus Shozo Sato for assisting us in arranging this visit.
