Event description
Scientific data meets traditional Indigenous and contemporary arts, in the Seeding Treaty animations.

About this Event

The animations were made to disseminate a message: that the spirit of inclusion and cooperation that sustained Aboriginal Australia for tens of thousands of years is the same spirit that drives the Antarctic Treaty, and all treaties (agreements) within us, between us and our lands and waterways. Seeding Treaty was created for the conference, Antarctic Connections at the End of the World, in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, in this year of Indigenous languages, and the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty.

For National Science Week, Seeding Treaty is projected in the theatre of Eora TAFE, and the Data Area at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), as an immersive experience in passing on knowledge. Seeding Treaty was created by Maddison Gibbs and Lisa Roberts from Living Data residencies at the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and UTS, and supported by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACECRC), and The Central Science Laboratory. Students from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne contributed with animations made in response to Living Data Conversations about the recent fish kills in the Murray Darling River.
