Event description

Description

Algae are our main oxygen producers on earth. They exist in nearly every ecosystem and contribute to the most fundamental biological processes on our planet. Which opportunities do algae offer already today for an environmentally sustainable future? Are we ready to change our everyday conventions to face fresh and sustainable alternatives instead?

Fara Peluso invites us to turn from an observer of biotechnological processes into an inventor and experimenter: Combining a DIY biology laboratory and a speculative design approach, Algature participants are introduced to the Spirulina algae. The session starts with an introduction about methods of creating not only speculative, but readily possible futures. In the second part of the workshop, emerging biotechnologies that change the ways we understand regenerative processes today are introduced and develop a tool for the cultivation of algae - the photobioreactor.

Each workshop participant will be equipped with a algae culture, a flask and an oxygen pump to take home to cultivate their own algae cultures.

Algature is part of the project Living Canvas. As an artistic research project it provides an opportunity to witness existing technical possibilities of integrating natural biological process into our consciousness that inspire and orientate our actions towards sustainability.

The artwork is part of the ongoing exhibition series Field Experiments on view until 15 April 2019.

Living Canvas is developed in partnership with Solaga and supported by innogy Foundation. The exhibition is presented as part of transmediale and CTM’s Vorspiel and with kind support of HELGA and Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle.
