WHAT IS ZUMBA?

Zumba is a dance fitness program built on Latin and international rhythms. Instructors use non-verbal cueing to lead participants through each song.

I HAVE NO RHYTHM/AM A TERRIBLE DANCER. CAN I DO ZUMBA?

Zumba isn't about mastering choreography. If your moves don't match your instructor's, that's okay! If you're moving and having fun, you're doing it correctly.

I'M RECOVERING FROM AN INJURY/HAVE A PHYSICAL LIMITATION. CAN I DO ZUMBA?

Yes! Though you should be mindful to do everything at your level and make modifications as needed. This might mean limiting range of motion by making smaller movements or reducing impact by stepping instead of jumping. If something hurts, don't do it.

I'M SUPER FIT. WILL ZUMBA CHALLENGE ME?

Participants are free to make modifications as they see fit, which can certainly mean kicking it up a notch by lifting knees higher or lunging deeper. You do you! If something isn't intense enough, take it to the next level!

WHO IS MJ AND WHAT MAKES HER QUALIFIED TO TEACH ZUMBA?

MJ (Maryjo) has been a licensed Zumba instructor since 2011. She has taught weekly classes at the YMCA Anthony Bowen in Washington, DC since 2014, been a substitute instructor at American University since 2018, and completed "Pro Skills" training in 2019. You can visit her Zumba web site here: https://www.zumba.com/en-US/profile/maryjo-oster/360811

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

Participants are encouraged to take breaks to get a drink of water or to catch their breath whenever needed. I promise I'll still be here when you get back. I'm CPR certified, but I can't do it over the Internet.

Sound good? Awesome, let's do this!
