About this Event

MADRID BOOKIE invites you to an evening with poet and writer SPENCER REECE. You’ll hear about his latest book, The Secret Gospel of Mark, an exquisite memoir of a life saved by poetry. Spencer and Kit will also share their thoughts on writing in exile, resilience and the power of language.

SPENCER REECE is the author of two previous collections of poetry, The Clerk’s Tale and The Road to Emmaus. Spencer’s next book, a collection of watercolors and quotes called All the Beauty Still Left: A Poet’s Painted Book of Hours, will be published in April by Turtle Point Press.

Spencer has won awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Whiting Foundation. His second book was a finalist for the Griffin Prize and longlisted for the National Book Award.

Spencer founded the Unamuno Author Series in Madrid and helped establish the Lorca Prize. He now lives in New York, where he is the priest-in-charge at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church.

KIT FAN is a novelist, poet, and critic. Diamond Hill, his debut novel about Hong Kong, will be published by Dialogue Books/Little, Brown in May 2021. His second poetry collection, As Slow As Possible, was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and one of the Irish Times Books of the Year. He was shortlisted twice for the Guardian 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize, and won Northern Writers Award, Times Stephen Spender Poetry Translation Prize, and POETRY’s Editors Prize for Reviewing.
