UNESCO Heritage Site Tour with a Brazilian history scholar
Paraty’s unique XIX century colonial urban planning and architecture makes it one of the most picturesque places in the world. Together its culture and its surrounding biodiversity hotspot, Costa Verde, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Join Juanjo, a Brazilian history scholar and licensed tour guide, on a 2 hr virtual stroll of Paraty historical center geared to intellectually curious travelers. You will learn about Paraty’s importance through several historical eras of Brazil, such as the terminus of the 800 km “Golden Road” that financed the Portuguese Empire for decades.
The walk tells the history of the city and country through its buildings and landmarks within the historic downtown such as churches, old houses and squares. We’ll discuss of the concept of “Slavocracy” and watch a presentation of some of the cultural expressions such as music and Capoeira.
Support cultural, culinary and art-related sustainable local projects
We’ll end our time together speaking about the major cultural influences sustaining the city today, such as a puppet theater “Contadores de Historias” and an artisanal coffee shop and roaster “Las Montañitas.” You’ll have an opportunity to continue learning about these cultural institutions as Juanjo passes off their websites for you to enjoy after the conclusion of the tour.
