About this event
In response to the ever-shifting locale of his childhood, legendary story writer Clark Blaise became a collector of places and, akin to Faulkner, acutely focused on the relationship between regionalism and identity. Selected from fifty years of writing, the twenty-four stories that comprise This Time, That Place move swiftly across place and time—from a blaring TV set in Florida's Confederate swampland, to working-class Pittsburgh, to the streets of Montreal, where characters stumble in and out of languages. “If you want to understand something about what life was like in the restless, peripatetic, striving, anxiety-ridden, shimmer cultural soup of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries,” writes Margaret Atwood, “read the stories of Clark Blaise.” Join us on Fulton Street with fellow author Alexander MacLeod (Animal Person) for a very special evening of reading and conversation about the short shorty form.
