Event Details

Live Oak will be installing solar panels on its building the weekend of Feb. 16, 17, & 18 (President's Day). We need volunteers to learn how to to install solar in a classroom setting and then there will be an opportunity on the 17th to put your new skills to work by helping to install a solar system at the church. Join us to learn more about solar energy, promote green energy, and work with professionals in the solar field. Here is the schedule:

  • Sat, Feb 16 9:00 - 12:00: Volunteer orientation (classroom-style at Live Oak)
This 3-hour classroom training session teaches the basics of rooftop solar, solar equipment, electricity, and construction safety.

Those that participate in above orientation can also volunteer to participate in the following solar installation shifts (we have just one more volunteer shift available).

  • Sunday Feb. 17: 12:30 - 4:30: Solar installation at Live Oak (more volunteer needed)

We hope you will join the Live Oak congregation along with SunWork to volunteer! Once trained, you can also help on future SunWork projects – mostly in San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County.  SunWork also installs solar for low-electricity-using homes in these areas.

As you'll learn at the Saturday training, we encourage volunteers to wear long pants and close-toed shoes while they're helping with an installation. The great majority of volunteers participate in tasks that take place on the roof, but it's not necessarily a requirement. Tennis shoes or running shoes are best – they provide good traction and nimbleness while being gentle on the roof surfaces. Wearing clothing that you don't mind getting dirty is highly recommended. SunWork provides gloves, protective eyeware, hard hats, and knee guards for your use. Please consider bringing a wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap to help provide shade from the sun when you're not wearing your hard hat.
