June 6, June 13, June 20, June 27, July 4 - SMA Alumni Band
Join us for the annual summer residency of the Stax Music Academy Alumni Band. Playing your favorite Stax, Motown, and other R&B hits, the Alumni Band features recent high school graduates and current college students home on summer break. The program provides not only ongoing music instruction but also summer employment for the students. If you want to hear the BEST in retro R&B, this is the band for you!
July 11 - Detective Bureau
Memphis' resident Afro-Brazilian, soul jazz combo, Detective Bureau combines the subtle groove of Grant Green with the percussive Latin beats of the early 70s CTI jazz label, featuring the lead guitar of Joe Restivo. Not to be missed!
July 18 - Nick Black
Nick Black is Memphis’ newest soul artist stepping out onto the music scene, and he’s doing it with a style that will force you take notice. Take his modern soul voice, fold in some horns and strings, add an infusion of hip-hop and old school R&B, and you’ve got a sound that demands attention.
July 25 - African Jazz Ensemble
The spirit of improvisation and freedom of music lives on with this Memphis group that pays homage to John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Following the performance, band members will lead an all ages, hands-on workshop on improvisation and the creative spirit.
