Live Here, Learn Here Community Conversation at Weeksville Heritage Center
Event Information
Description
Are you helping to raise the next generation of Central Brooklyn kids? Come spend an evening getting to know your neighbors and talking about family, home, schools, and community. Together, we'll ponder this question:
How do you choose a school for your child?
- Live Here, Learn Here is a diverse network of Central Brooklyn residents committed to the idea that strong schools are the heart of a strong community. We work collectively with school and district leadership to encourage community building centered around our schools, and add our voices to the fight for equity and social justice in the New York City educational system.
- Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn’s largest African-American cultural institution, is a multidisciplinary museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn—one of America’s first free black communities.
- The Human Root is dedicated to bridging cultural gaps between people to create, improve and maintain relationships and institutions that honor our individual and collective humanity. We use social and emotional learning to help communities expand their consciousness, accountability and vision, and to thrive on equity—"everyone gets what they need."
We are proud to be working together to present a series of community conversations this fall. Our inaugural session in October was wonderful—come be a part of session two!
This time it's potluck! We'll "chat 'n' chew" from 6-7, and start the conversation promptly at 7. Bring a friend, bring a dish to share, and bring the kids. We'll provide fun, high-quality childcare from Trail Blazers for kids over the age of three (younger children are welcome to stay with the adults), and some pizza to make everyone extra happy.
Special thanks to Trail Blazers and to New York Appleseed for the support.

Organizer of Live Here, Learn Here Community Conversation at Weeksville Heritage Center
Live Here, Learn Here is a diverse network of Central Brooklyn residents committed to the idea that strong schools are the heart of a strong community. We support and promote the public schools in Brooklyn’s District 17, which comprises Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Prospect Heights and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. When residents, community groups and businesses invest in local schools, the children and families in our community thrive.
We work collectively with school and district leadership to enhance the connection between schools and community resources of all kinds, support school-based parent groups in their fundraising efforts, raise additional money for schools, encourage conversation and community building centered around our schools, and add our voices to the fight for equity and social justice in the New York City educational system.
We welcome everyone who is committed to the success of our local schools.
