Description

Please join us for drinks, small bites, and inspiration as we celebrate community and friendship and the posthumous publication of Mallory Smith’s Salt in My Soul, An Unfinished Life.

Like our daughter Caitlin, Los Angeles native Mallory had severe cystic fibrosis. She received a transplant in September of 2017 but two months later, did not survive a vicious infection. Mallory left instructions for her mother to get her memoir into the world. Now, Random House has published it to deep admiration and praise. From the LA Times:

"Mallory’s writing blossoms from the precocious philosophizing of a driven teenager grappling with a serious disease into the exquisitely nuanced chronicle of a terrified but hopeful young woman whose life was beginning and ending, all at once.

“I have a strong urge,” Mallory wrote, “to write something that will change people. I want to create a piece so moving that people are in disbelief. And I want it to be like handing people a pair of glasses, giving them a way of seeing something they didn’t even realize they weren’t seeing.”"

Mallory’s mother, Diane Shader Smith, will share some of Mallory’s insights for “living happy” regardless of circumstance. In a generous act, the Smiths will donate the profits from the evening’s book sales to The Leo Project in Honor of Caitlin O’Hara.

The Leo Project is the brainchild of Caitlin's close friend Jess Danforth, who has been dealing with her own breast cancer diagnosis these past years. But at Caitlin's service, Jess vowed to do something extraordinary that would honor her best friend's life. To date, she has raised over $200,000, purchased an acre of land, and constructed the building that will house a resource center for vulnerable children in Nanyuki, Kenya. Jess will be with us to share progress photos of The Leo Project.

Please reserve your free ticket(s) as soon as possible as we will have a Boston bookseller in attendance who needs a solid estimate of how many books to have on hand. And we need numbers so we can plan the bites.

With thanks and much love, Nick & Maryanne O’Hara
