A live virtual drawing workshop

About this Event

Discover your inner artist in this live virtual drawing workshop. Facilitated by artist Jill Galloway, the workshop will include guided instruction on the techniques and challenges of figure drawing, and provide participants a chance to share their work at the end of the session. Each program will highlight exhibitions and themes from the National Portrait Gallery collection. Open to all skill levels, ages 18 and up. Please see below for materials needed for individual sessions.

The Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants 24- 48 hours in advance of the program. The email will come from Eventbrite. Please only register for yourself. We will only be allowing participants into the meeting if their name (and email address) is on the registration list.

The Portrait Gallery strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as captioning, please email JonesVE@si.edu at least two weeks in advance of the program.

January 7th: How to Scale Portraits down to miniature size

Portraits come in many different shapes and sizes. In this lesson, we will focus on some portraits of our first ladies in our new exhibition, Every Eye is Upon Me: First Ladies of the United States, and we'll look how to scale a portrait down to a miniature size.

The supplies you'll need for this lesson are a pencil, paper and a ruler.

January 21st: Working with gouache and watercolors

In this lesson we will explore the difference between gouache and watercolor. Looking closely at the works of Boris Chaliapin in our new exhibition, Every Eye is Upon Me: First Ladies of the United States, we will set up a composition and compare the two mediums.

The supplies you'll need for this lesson are pencil, paper (watercolor paper if you have it), and either gouache or watercolors.
