Event description

Description

It’s that time of year in Southern California when it is just too hot for K9 training during the day under the blaring sun…..unless you are inside and have an AIR CONDITIONED crating area and real bathrooms!

The Scentsable K9 has obtained access to another training venue used by military and law enforcement personnel. Academi Southwest is a 61,000 sf facility located in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego. Literally just steps from the border! This new venue as several interior search areas with a catwalk so others may observe without getting in the way and a huge area for all sorts of container configurations!

You get to decide what type of coaching will best suit your training goals. We will customize the searches for each teams individual needs. You can decide if you want known or unknown amount and locations of hides, live coaching as your search or debrief at the end…it’s all up to you! All teams will be given a feedback sheet to take home.

So you’re not a K9 Scent Sports handler? Perfect! Just bring your training aids and we will place them in the search are for you! Narcotics, HRD, EDD, Firearms, etc….All detection teams are welcome!

***Seminar Requirements***

All K9 teams should be able to search for and recognize their target odors. This is NOT an imprinting class.

Not only do we have a new facility but we are excited to announce the addition of two new members of The Scentsable K9 cadre of instructors, Chris Oliver and Kevin Olin.

Your instructors for this seminar are:

Pete Stevens-

Pete is a 29 year law enforcement veteran. He has handled and trained law enforcement K9’s for 18 years. Pete has personally handled 3 different Police Service Dogs, both single and dual purpose, during his career while training numerous others. Working in a border town kept Pete busy doing narcotics interdiction work and he has a knack for finding secret hidden compartments in vehicles. He is an evaluator/certifying official for the State of California (CA POST) and California Narcotic Canine Association for patrol functions and detection. Pete is also a NACSW Nosework Trial Judge and USCSS Trial Judge. Pete has also conducted over 40 workshops and Seminars with The Scentsable K9.

Chris Oliver-

Chris is a full time Correctional Officer and K9 handler with nineteen years of law enforcement experience. He has been a K9 handler for seven years. Chris is working with his second partner, a four year old Black Lab rescue, who is certified in narcotic detection.

Chris has studied K9 scent detection under Gregg Tawney, Cameron Ford as well as other instructors and has a huge passion for scent training. He loves learning and sharing the amazing intelligence dogs have and is a firm believer of using science and positive reinforcement training.

Chris and his K9 partner compete in the Western States Police Canine Association (WSPCA) narcotic trials to keep their skills sharp.

Chris is the Owner/Trainer of K9 Furst Detection K9 Training LLC. In his off time Chris judges for the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) and American Kennel Club (AKC). Chris also provides educational training seminars, and trains civilian sport dogs in odor detection (nosework). Chris is also a certifying official with the California Narcotics Canine Association (CNCA) and Police Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Kevin Olin-

Kevin has been in law enforcement for 28 years, former SWAT Team member, and a K9 handler for the past 7 years. Kevin’s current assignment is focused is on interdiction of large quantities of controlled substances along the southwest border. As a K9 team, they’ve recovered literally thousands of pounds of illegal narcotics, primarily in deeply concealed hidden compartments of vehicles. Several task force agencies, both federal and state, have utilized Kevin and his K9 partner to assist in locating hidden narcotics during traffic stops and the execution of search warrants. Kevin is transferring his knowledge of narcotics work to the sport of scent detection. Kevin has a passion for detection work off the clock as well. He and “Roxy”, the family Rottweiler, attended the Logan Haus Detection Fundamentals Seminar and are currently training with The Scentsable K9 in K9 scent sports. Kevin has recently become an NACSW Nosework Trial Judge.
