About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Mobile eTicket

Hosted by our neighbors at Die Stammkneipe Brooklyn (710 Fulton St.) and led by former Greenlight general manager Alexis, our fiction book group meets monthly to discuss paperback fiction, reading broadly in contemporary fiction with the occasional diversion into classics. For December, the group will discuss Gaia, Queen of Ants from Uzbek author-in-exile Hamid Ismailov, translated by Shelley Fairweather-Vega. One of Ismailov's few novels written in Uzbek, Gaia, Queen of Ants offers a rare portrait of a complex and little-known part of the world. A plot centered on political corruption and ethnic conflict is punctuated with Sufi philosophy and religious gullibility. As Ismailov's characters grapple with questions of faith, power, sex, and family, Gaia, Queen of Ants presents a moving tale of universal themes set against a Central Asian backdrop in the twenty-first century.

Book group meetings will be held in DSK's private meeting space; enter through the bar. Drinks and food available for purchase; one item purchase minimum is encouraged! Fiction book group hosts hybrid meetings—if you would prefer to attend virtually, you can register via Zoom.
