Event description

Description

Live Animal Study is back for 2017, and kids' tickets are half-price! Bring your young ones along with your sketchbooks & pencils to enjoy one of RISD's most beloved treasures, the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab - celebrating its 80th anniversary this year!

Enjoy a rare opportunity to study a handful of live exotic (and some not-so-exotic) animals up close and personal! Humane Educator and RISD alumna Laurelin Sitterly [03 IL] will present on each creature's basic anatomy, movement, and habits that will be sure to inspire you and provide a wealth of knowledge for your animal-themed projects. Taxidermy and skeletal models will also be available to examine, courtesy of the Lab. This is an event to draw with your child, gather inspiration from the animal world, practice your craft amidst an active environment.

Advance registration is required and tickets are limited. Please contact RISD/RI Alumni Club Leader Christina Rodriguez [03 IL] at christina.rodriguez@alumni.risd.edu with any questions.

About the Speaker

Laurelin Sitterly [03 IL] has taught Humane Education for years in workshops, SPCA conferences, children's classes, summer camps, and animal control department seminars. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, she lives and works in Providence, RI.

FAQs

I don't have kids. Can I still attend?
Yes, of course! Live Animal Study has a long tradition of welcoming adults as well as their kids. We're merely offering a lower-priced ticket to encourage more RISD alumni to share their love of the Nature Lab and drawing with their children.

What is the age recommendation for children to attend this event?
This program is ideal for children
ages 6 and up and must be physically and emotionally mature enough to handle the delicate taxidermy specimens safely, follow the Humane Educator's instructions, and treat the live animals with respect. A parent or guardian must supervise their child at all times.

My child has animal allergies. Which live animals will be present?
Reptiles, small mammals, birds, and Sierra, the cuddliest pit-mix ever to grace the Earth will visit for her 5th year running. Sierra loves belly rubs and will cover you in puppy love but also dog fur.

What art supplies can I bring to the Nature Lab?
Dry media such as pencils, markers, charcoal/conte crayon are acceptable, as well as light painting supplies like watercolors.
Please do NOT bring oil paints into the Nature Lab.

Where can I park?
RISD lots are open to the public on weekends, see this map for details:
http://bit.ly/1ascri6. Additionally, parking (metered or timed) is available along Benefit Street, North Main Street/South Main Street, or at various Metropark locations nearby.

How do I get access to the building?
A workstudy student will be on hand to let participants into the building. If you arrive late please call 401.454.6451.

What is the refund policy?
This event is rain or shine and refunds will only be issued if the Nature Lab must close due to an emergency. There can be
no refunds on cancelled registrations or no-shows.
