Essay writing shouldn't be intimidating!

Once you've learned the basic structure, it's confidence-building to lay out your thoughts so well -- and it'll help you do better in school, too! In Advanced EssayWriting Camp, we'll review the structure of the five-paragraph essay - its importance and parts. We'll each write our own original essay through the week, learning through discussion and fun, hands-on activities.

Our activities are geared to accommodate a range of ages simultaneously. There is no pre-reading for this camp; we'll just be reading short excerpts we hand out in the workshop, as models and inspiration.

Students will gain essential academic information in fun, hands-on ways:

  • dramatic activities and games that show why certain techniques work
  • sensory props to stimulate ideas and questions
  • inspiring examples for emulation
  • engaging projects that connect concepts with creative power

By these methods, and with in-class practice, students learn:

  • the structure of theLitWits 5-in-5 EssayWriting Camp five-paragraph essay - its importance and parts
  • how to outline and support a strong essay
  • how to engage the audience from the start
  • the art of transitions
  • how to vary syntax with punctuation and conjunctions
  • how to elevate colloquial language to academic heights
  • proofreading tips
  • ways to expand on the five-paragraph essay
  • and more!

Every student will take home an original essay  -- and strong skills and fun memories, too!

EssayWriting Camp aligns with these Common Core State Standards.

LitWits Workshops

We bring great books to life for kids!

A LitWits workshop is a sensory, creative, kinetic immersion in a pre-read book. It's amazing how much kids can learn while they're "just" having fun! In each workshop, we reach straight into the story to come up with:

sensory props (we see, hear, smell, and feel what the characters did)
bookbites (we taste what the characters ate)
creative projects (we make what a character made)
activities (we do what a character did)
academic handouts (we learn the story's narrative arc, vocabulary, and setting)
creative writing (usually modeled on something written or done in the story)

We use the same methods in our story and essay writing camps and teen Master Classes. We love helping kids "get" the thrill of well-crafted writing!
