Event description

Description

Little Italy welcomes artists from around the world who will literally paint S. High Street with massive chalk pastel classical and contemporary 3D drawings directly on the street. Expect live music, street performers, al fresco dining, arts and crafts for kids, a 3D workshop and art history lectures, and a rooftop Beatles concert atop Germano's PIATTINI after winners of the art competition are announced on Sunday.

EVENT SUMMARY. This 3-day international cultural event will showcase elaborate chalk paintings created by artists directly on S. High Street in Little Italy. The event will be enhanced by al fresco dining on delicious Italian food, wine and beer, live music and theater in a celebration of the contemporary renaissance of Baltimore's historic Italian neighborhood.

Our model for this event originated in Italy in a tradition that dates back to the 16th century; the art of street painting. Historically, madonnari were wandering artists in Italy who traveled village to village to earn their livelihood at various festivals and on various holy days. The artists often depicted religious images in their paintings, thus earning their name. Such a festival was first introduced in America in Santa Barbara, California in the 1980s. Today, street painters create breathtaking traditional and expressionistic compositions using the street as their canvas and chalk pastels as their medium.

EVENT PROGRAM. Artists will create chalk paintings on Little Italy's South High Street for the three event days (September 8, 9 and 10, 2017). The theme of the art this year is "Freedom." Professional and student artists will become imadonnari for the celebration. Little Italy proudly hosts Madonnari from around the globe, including Flavio Coppola, Francesca Arsi, Andrea Starinieri, ToMo, Ketty Grossi, Carlos Alberto GH, Vann Garz, Katie Better, Jennifer Chaparro and Mercedes Chaparro, Anthony Cappetto and Wendy Stum, Andrea Carlson, Sharyn Chan, Katie Bush, Erik Greenawalt, Ever Galvez, Bridget Lyons, Graham Curtis, Keri Lounge Lombardo, Holland Winslow, Jesse LuBera, Sara Wenger, Tonya Youngberg, Dave and Sharon Brenner, Ken Mullen and Hector Diaz, known internationally as The Chalk Guys, and Baltimore artists,Barbara Gruber, Jean Razulis, TOVEN, Paul Mericle, Maria Mendoza, Daniel Stuelpnagel, Sebastian Sears, KC Linn, Alex Fine and Chloe Elswick and Baltimore's own Maestro Madonnaro, Michael Kirby. This year teams of art students from local high schools will also create street paintings.

Local, national and international performing artists will participate in a series of indoor and outdoor events sponsored by the Little Italy restaurants. Laura Norris, founder and instructor of Mando for Kids, will lead her young Baltimore City musicians as they play Italian and contemporary music on bowlback mandolins. These emerging artists will be followed by the extraordinary musicians who comprise the Baltimore Mandolin Quartet. Bluegrass, Classical, jazz and indie musicians are scheduled throughout. Roving actors, a cappello and opera singers will also perform in and outside the restaurants.

Also on the weekends, the PNC Children's Chalk Center, a family Madonnari arts area, will be the site of children's arts and crafts and free chalk will be provided to young artists who will be able to draw on the street alongside the masters.

The winners of the art competition will be announced on Sunday followed by a live rooftop concert in a tribute to The Beatles 1969 concert on the roof of Apple Records provided by Baltimore's "Fab Five," The Apple Scruffs.

All of the foregoing events are FREE and open to the public.

Other musical events are scheduled in the Little Italy restaurants. A comprehensive schedule of events will be published on the LittleItalyMadonnari.com website and posted in the Little Italy restaurants And at the Madonnari Information Center at Kohler Signature Store.
