Description

Join Sonoma Land Trust staff on a guided hike to Pole Mountain through the Land Trust’s Little Black Mountain Preserve and learn about the fire history and management of this land. This preserve was one of the Land Trust’s earliest, donated by the Thierot Family (of the San Francisco Chronicle) after the Creighton Ridge Fire of 1978 decimated their homestead. We will be hiking a total of six miles with a 1,000- foot elevation gain up the north slope of Pole Mountain, ending with spectacular 360-degree views of the Sonoma Coast and beyond.

Level: Strenuous

About Little Black Mountain Preserve
The Little Black Mountain Preserve is a spectacular 500-acre property that was donated to SLT following the Creighton Ridge Fire in 1979. With an elevations ranging to 1960’ at Little Black Mountain, this property offers expansive views of the coast, the geysers, and Austin Creek Recreational area. The property contains the headwaters of St. Elmo Creek, Pole Mountain Creek and Kidd Creek, all of which eventually contribute to the Russian River. The mosaic of vegetation, springs and perennial water, complex geology, numerous habitat types and remote location all contribute to the unique biological diversity of the Little Black Mountain Preserve.

About Pole Mountain
The Pole Mountain Preserve is approximately 238 acres, and with an elevation of 2204 feet, contains the highest point in this area of Sonoma’s Coast. Relatively untouched by human activities, it includes open grasslands, mature oak savannah, pockets of redwood/Douglas-fir forests, cool lush riparian areas, and a fascinating natural rock slide. The highlight of visiting the Pole Mountain Preserve is experiencing spectacular, unobstructed views of the coast and many other areas of Sonoma County, and beyond, from numerous vantage points throughout the Preserve.
