Event description

Description

Are you willing to wear the same black outfit for five days as part of a campaign to bring awareness to sexual & domestic violence? That’s what the Junior League of Boston is asking members of the Boston community to do as part of the Little Black Dress Initiative between Feb. 25 and March 2.

The Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) is a campaign of the Junior League of Boston to bring awareness to poverty and violence against women, and the impacts they can have on a woman’s access to resources, her confidence and professional opportunities.

This year, we hope to raise $30,000 to support initiatives in the greater Boston community that are working to end to violence against women. By wearing the same outfit for five days, advocates will experience see life through the eyes of a woman who doesn’t have anything in her closet or the money to buy something new. The outfit will inevitably get dirty as the week goes on. People may look at you differently and you might not feel as confident and secure. The goal is to create understanding of how it feels to lack access to basic resources.

The 2019 LBDI fund recipients are the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) and Catie’s Closet.

How can you participate?

  • Donate: to give online, simply click here (coming soon) and select a participant. You can give donations directly to any participant, or you can mail them to the JL Boston Office (117 Newbury Street, Boston MA 02116). Please make sure to note the participant you are supporting on your check for tracking purposes.
  • Become an advocate: You don't have to be a member of JL Boston, we welcome anyone who wants to join us! Attend the Kickoff party to receive your LBDI advocate welcome kit, including a sticker to wear each of the five days and to get information to set up your fundraising page. SIGN UP TO BE AN ADVOCATE TODAY!
  • Spread the word: Share LBDI on social media leading up to and during the campaign using the hashtag #LBDIBoston. Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about how they can help provide resources to women and children in crisis in Boston.

The Kick-Off Event

Join us for the LBDI Kick Off Party on Thursday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Explorateur. This is an event to welcome advocates and introduce the community to the campaign.

Admission includes heavy hors d'oeuvres - no need to get dinner elsewhere! Learn about how the power of a black dress (or pantsuit!) can raise awareness of the distresses of poverty and violence against women in our community. Can you imagine getting ready for work and only having one outfit to wear for the entire week? For many in greater Boston, that’s a reality. But we can work together to change that.

At the end of the week our outfits will be dry cleaned and donated to Caitie’s Closet.
