Event description

Description

Why read literature? Philosophy, religion, and science all have their claims to truth, and many look there to find it. Others seek connection in today's kaleidescope of sharing and posting in the immediacy of social media platforms. For others, such as our three panelists, literature has been the path to deeper truths of meaning or wisdom. Faculty member James Boobar, staff member Matthew Taylor, and President Greg Salyer—mentors, scholars, and friends—invite you to hear their stories of how literature has led them to meaning and continues to be the path that provides wisdom. Join us for a dialogue in celebration of literature as a way to wisdom. We look forward to hearing your own thoughts and stories as we explore literature as an avenue to greater understanding.

About the panel:

James Boobar is a graduate of Stonecoast Writing program, with an MFA in Fiction and concentration in Literary Theory. His teaching includes intensive college seminars, lectures, online teaching, and even a "seminar in the streets" in St. Petersburg, Russia. He lives, works, and writes in Izmir, Turkey. He's fascinated with how literature refuses to stay in books as encounters with readers inspire reflection, understanding, dialogue, engagement and foster more reading as seeking.

Matthew Taylor is the Director of Academic Services at the University of Philosophical Research, where he works with faculty to develop courses that enrich and broaden our curricula. His academic background is in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on literature and critical theory. The Director of Marketing thinks he's the coolest.

Greg Salyer, Ph.D. is the President of the University of Philosophical Research and the CEO of the Philosophical Research Society. For twenty-five years, he has been an administrator and scholar in higher education institutions, but his highest calling has always been that of teacher. Trained in interdisciplinary studies, Dr. Salyer moves through the disciplines of literature, philosophy, and religious studies looking for and helping his students find practical and profound wisdom in the stories, texts, and ideas created all over the world and throughout history.
